Unison Lake Safety Programme

Programme will run on 18th & 19th April 2011 – cost is 12.50per person for 4 hours of water safety education.

The ‘Unison Lake Safety Programme’ is a Lake Safety initiative in partnership with Rotorua District Council, Rotorua Aquatic Centre and Swimsation with the principal support sponsor being Unison – “The Powerlines People”. The Unison Lake Safety Programme is a first in New Zealand and has been designed to equip children with the key elements of Aquatic Awareness and Lake Safety ensuring that they have adequate Lake Safety survival skills, whilst having fun in, on and around the lakes of Rotorua.

Actual Cost $12.50  
Plus subsidy from Unison $12.50 
Total Cost (includes Unison contribution) $25.00

Programme Structure:
Rotorua Swimsation is flexible in planning the programme delivery to our clients, and there are several options available

Compact Programme
2 X 2 hour sessions based at the Rotorua Aquatic Centre

Ratio:
1 Tutor/10children + 1 – 2 Parent/Teacher helpers per group

Activities

Life Jackets:
We teach children how to put on a Life Jacket, teach children 3 safety jumps into deep water. Taking life jacket off and putting it on whilst in the water, also doing group activities, forming the Huddle and learning the HELP position.

Swimming Skills & Cold Water Survival Skills::
We cover the basic swimming skills in the water. Freestyle and Backstroke as well as floating on their front and back.  Also learning how to keep warm in a cold environment.

Non contact & Contact Rescues:
We teach numerous ways of rescuing people in danger with and without aids. Preparing them for surreal situations and ensuring their own safety first.

Exit and Entries:
Knowledge of various entries into the water and knowing when to use them

Kayaks and Capsized Boats:
eaching children the safety procedures in the event of a capsized boat. Swimming to the capsized boat and holding on to the side. Practice submerging and breathing underneath the craft. How to enter and exit Kayak safely, paddle backwards and forwards. How to stop the Kayak in an emergency.

Instructors will also ask children Water Safety question throughout the lessons.
